Fish Care
Any home will benefit from the beauty of an aquarium, and it is not difficult to maintain. Aquariums do require cleaning and your fish will need to be fed. Regular cleaning and maintenance only has to take about a half an hour, if you do a little each week.
It is a good idea to feed your fish every day. It is very easy to over feed fish so be careful. The most common food for fish is flakes however there are other foods available. Fish often do better when they are fed a varied diet. Depending on what kind of fish you have you might consider trying, pellets, frozen foods or freeze dried.
When you are feeding your fish take a minute to check that all your fish are healthy. Watch to make sure that all the fish in the tank are swimming and eating well. Check for any irregular coloration or growths on your fish. The sooner you detect a problem the greater the chances are of preventing it from spreading.
Every week you should test the chemical levels in your tank. The things you should check are the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels. Any major change in these conditions can result in potentially dangerous or toxic situations. 20% of the water in the tank needs to be changed every week.
Once a week you should also check and see if all the equipment in your tank is functioning correctly. To ensure that your filter is in good condition check it. Depending on what kind of filter you own you may only need to clean it twice a month but check it every week. You also need to take a look at all electric cords and cables to be sure that they are in good condition.
Never clean everything in your aquarium at the same time. When cleaning your tank only clean one or two items at a time. You may discover that you have caused spikes in your chemical levels if you try to clean more than this. Be certain that you include glass cleaning as part of your routine. All the algae on the glass should be removed.
If you do these things as part of your fish care routine, you will have a tank full of healthy vibrant fish, that will live a long time.
