Another thing to check for children with this problem is that they are not consuming too many liquids late at night, especially before bed time.

Waking in the middle of the night and retention control should be encouraged through positive reenforcement from the parents. Negative responses such as anger and impatience will only serve to increase the five year old child's stress levels and lower their self-esteem, neither of which is helpful to solve the underlying problem. The child should not be made to feel shamed of these episodes, they should only be encouraged to break the habit.
Medicating the child or changing their diet to help with bed wetting should not be done without direct approval of the child's doctor. Doing either of these things can increase the child's stress level and might have an adhere affect on the child's bed wetting problem.
