I was almost tempted to list this as number one. Since most carpets are padded, you can possibly get away without one of these. Even so, if you have one, your exercises on the floor will be easier. You'll feel less sore if you use a floor mat for such exercises as a lying leg raise. The same goes for performing planks. I make sure that I end every ab workout with one or two sets of planks. Doing these without a floor mat is brutal.
